Fatigue?

This post is not meant for us children-rather, it is aimed at fathers who work morning to morning (or late night). The first time I realized that something like fatigue existed was when an advertisement spreading awareness about it came on the television. The ad showed a family trying to surprise a father with a birthday cake, but, in the few seconds that he closes his eyes, he falls asleep. It ends with a notice saying that a million Indians suffer from fatigue.
I immediately realized that my father must be suffering from fatigue. Whenever he received the chance, he would fall asleep within seconds. Sometimes, the skin beneath his eyes would sag due to lack of rest. The ral pointer was the fact that he often would be working up till one in the morning. This post is to warn him-and you-of the many dangers of fatigue, along with its causes.
Fatigue can be described, in simple words, as either exhaustion or lethargy. Due to this, the average attentiveness of a person decreases. This can be an extremely dangerous occurrence, especially if the person in question is currently practicing a work that requires constant attention. The person can even lapse into what people call "micro-sleeps." Micro sleeps are those which can last for any time between half a second and thirty second. However, this apparently small difference can change the outcome of a life.
This is not to be taken lightly. A video of a man who fell asleep while driving at sixty miles per an hour was recently featured on television. The result turned out to be rather lucky-for the man. His car smashed head first into a tree, before toppling over with him trapped inside. At length, he was able to wriggle his way out, with only a few bruises. If you are wondering why I said he was lucky, it is because it could have been a lot worse-suppose hospitalization.
The type of fatigue I am talking about here is Mental Fatigue. It is what is caused either by:
  1. working
  2. mental stress
  3. overstimulation and under stimulation
  4. jet lag or active recreation
  5. depression
  6.  boredom
  7. disease
  8. lack of sleep
The other type is physical fatigue, which is caused by overworking the muscles. Howver, this is natural, and therefore, I will not talk about it. Signs of Mental Fatigue are:
  1. weakness
  2. lack of energy
  3. constantly tired or exhausted
  4. lack of motivation
  5. difficulty concentrating
  6. difficulty starting and completing tasks
  7.  loss of consciousness (syncope)
  8. near-syncope
  9. rapid heartbeat (palpitations)
  10. dizziness
  11. vertigo
If your father is already suffering from fatigue, tell him to follow the following steps:
  1. iron supplements for anemia
  2. medications and machines to help sleep apnea
  3. medications to control blood sugar
  4. medications to regulate thyroid function
  5. vitamins
  6. recommendations for dietary changes and a sensible exercise program
  7. get more sleep!
If he is not, stop him by:
  1. Manage stress and practice relaxation techniques.
  2. Get exercise, but begin slowly and check with your health care practitioner before beginning any exercise program. Find a good time to exercise and develop a habit of exercise.
  3. Check your medications with a health care practitioner or pharmacists to see if some medications could be responsible for fatigue.
  4. Improve your diet and eat a good breakfast (whole grain cereal, fruit, milk). Add more fruits and vegetables.
  5. Stop any excessive caffeine consumption.
  6. Stop smoking.
  7. Get enough sleep and have a good and consistent sleep routine (sleep hygiene). Go to bed at the same time every night.
  8. Avoid coffee, tea, or caffeinated drinks after 6 pm.
  9. Do not drink alcohol after dinner, and decrease the total amount of alcohol consumed .(Alcohol interferes with sleep patterns.)
  10. People with underlying medical conditions (for example, diabetes, COPD, anxiety) can reduce symptoms of their disease, including fatigue, by working with their health care practitioners to optimize the treatment of the underlying problems.
I hope you found this post about fatigue informational. If you realize that you father/mother is suffering from fatigue, do not hesitate to tell him how to reduce the effects of fatigue. If he is not, gently tell him how to prevent it-or there may be serious repercussions.
I am very sorry to end on such a grim note.
Make sure your parents don't suffer from either stress or fatigue.
